Soapbox racers hit high speeds at fundraiser in Nanaimo

Hub City Soapbox Derby was held Aug. 18 in Old City Quarter

A steeper hill and a record number of competitors meant fast races and a fast-paced event at this past weekend's Hub City Soapbox Derby.

The event Sunday, Aug. 18, on Franklyn Street in Nanaimo, attracted more than 50 racers to hurtle down the hill and raise money for the Nanaimo Child Development Centre. A final fundraising tally wasn't available at press time, but organizers expected the sum would be more than $17,000.

Preston Dahle of the Skibidi Toilet team won the kid's division, with Alex Balderston second and Georgia Ramsden third. In the adults' race, Jay Clayton of the Alair Alaironas team was the winner, with Kaden Dahle runner-up and Chris Gulliver third.

Eric Pries of the Overnight Parts from Japan team and Budget Glass were chosen as the most creative carts and the best pit crew award went to Ounsted Formula Won.

In addition to the kids' and the adults' divisions of soapbox racing, the event featured a fun fair along Wesley Street with other family activities.

Organizers thanked sponsors and said anyone interested in sponsoring in the event or racing next year is encouraged to visit www.facebook.com/HubCitySoapBoxDerby.
