Young Indigenous athletes from across the Coast Salish region will compete in Nanaimo this month, hosted by the Snuneymuxw First Nation.
Officially known as 2024 tsetsuw' hiw'a'lum'is or the Coast Salish Games, events include soccer, track and field, paddling and basketball, with competitors between the ages of 7 to 16.
“It is a privilege to work and lead the 2024 tsetsuw hiw’a’lum on behalf of Snuneymuxw First Nation, as the host in collaboration with the Coast Salish Nations, community partners, and Indigenous organizations," said Dano Thorne, 2024 tsetsuw’ hiw’a’lum’ tournament director in a press release. "Sports and culture as the catalyst changes the lives of our sacred youths. As a past athlete, coach, and administrator I have seen many youths achieve and transform their lives into healthy young athletes and role models. The games are the best starting point for our youths.”

Following the games, the annual Snuneymuxw Days celebration will begin, taking place on July 26 to 28.
The event serves as an opportunity for non-Snuneymuxw members to visit the community, enjoy the festivities, and experience Snuneymuxw culture.
In the release, Chief Mike Wyse said all are welcome to attend and celebrate July's events.
“I look forward to welcoming thousands of young athletes, families, and fans to beautiful Snuneymuxw territory in July for the 2024 tsetsuw’ hiw’a’lum’ and Snuneymuxw Days," Wyse said. "These epic events help keep our teachings alive and are amazing examples of collaboration, wellness and culture."
Snuneymuxw Days will begin on Friday July 26, with water sports from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and war canoe races from 1 to 6 p.m. between Needham and Shoreline Dr.
The marketplace, which will include vendors that include artists and small business owners, takes place at 1145 Totem Rd. in the Snuneymuxw Recreation and Wellness Centre's gym on Saturday, July 27, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday, July 28, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
For sports, three-on-three basketball is scheduled throughout the weekend with a $400 prize for first place. The deadline to enter is Saturday, July 20. Participants can register by contacting John White at johnlw@snuneymuxw.ca or calling 250-616-7968.
For youth, a kids zone will be at at 668 Centre Street with bouncy castle, face painting and snacks. Food trucks will be parked alongside the activities.
