Shredding documents helps reduce theft

NANAIMO – City asks residents to shred personal documents before recycling.
77858nanaimoShred

The city of Nanaimo is asking residents to ensure personal documents are shredded before being put out for recycling, as garbage collectors reported seeing individuals near collection routes who appear to be searching through yellow bags for papers.

Any document containing personal information should be shredded prior to recycling, including bank statements, pay stubs, tax information, invoices, health and medical records and any documents containing SIN numbers, other ID numbers and passwords.

Please call the Nanaimo RCMP non-emergency number at 250-754-2345 if you spot anyone suspicious looking through your garbage or recycling. The city is running its curbside recycling inspection program so city employees might be checking recycling.
