Search on for worst road

The British Columbia Automobile Association wants to find the worst road in Nanaimo.

Do the potholes along your route to work rattle your car’s tie rods?

Do you steer clear of a particular intersection for safety reasons or find yourself sitting idle in traffic more often?

If so, you may be able to help the British Columbia Automobile Association find the worst road in Nanaimo as part of the organization’s Worst Road campaign.

Until April 23, BCAA members and B.C. residents are invited to vote for the road in their respective community that they feel is most in need of repair or redesign.

BCAA wants to hear about roads that suffer from congestion, potholes, odd or confusing road signs, traffic lights or areas that compromise pedestrian and cycling safety.

“As a motorist, cyclist or pedestrian, roads that are deteriorating, inadequately maintained or poorly designed affect your pocketbook, stress level and personal safety,” said Ken Cousins, BCAA spokesman. “By voting, you can draw some attention to rough, unsafe or inefficient roads in your community.”

After voting closes, BCAA will share detailed results with municipalities and the provincial Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure to ensure they are aware of road users’ concerns and to find out how they are planning to improve B.C.’s problem roads and highways.

Once the final results are tallied, a list of the Top 20 Worst Roads will be published.

“The intent of this campaign is not to criticize the state of B.C.’s roads generally, but to help British Columbians bring attention to those roads that may have been overlooked, and to help municipalities and the province in their plans for future road improvements,” said Cousins.
