If owning a boat is the only thing stopping you from getting on the water, don’t bail out yet.
Van-Isle Sailing Co-op has a solution.
Started in 2005, the co-op offers Nanaimo area residents opportunities to get out on the water without incurring the expense of buying and maintaining a boat. At a few hundred dollars a year for membership, the cost is far below that of ownership.
“The co-op is for people who love to go sailing, but don’t have enough time to warrant the expense of keeping a boat in the water,” said David McCallum, co-op membership director.
The non-profit organization also teaches sailing to both prospective sailors with little or no experience or others with some background on the water.
Anyone interested in learning more about the co-op is invited to take part in an open house from 9 a.m. into the late afternoon on June 8 on the docks at the Nanaimo Boat Basin.
Members are provided access for a one-time fee of $400, plus annual fees of $450 per person, $525 for a family and $100 for an associate member restricted to crewing.
