Mai Pham knows first hand the importance of the emergency department at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital.

Having seen her father treated in the hospital and knowing how busy the ER can be, Pham was inspired to pledge her support for the new emergancy department under construction through the Nanaimo and District Hospital Foundation’s annual Run for Life.

And those efforts made her the top pledge earner, raising $1,800 for the cause.

“It is important for everyone in town to do a little bit for our hospital,” she said.

The 2012 fun run/walk celebrated its ninth year at the end of May, with more than 160 participants raising $21,500.

Run committee co-chairman Greg Scott said pledges to the cause were double of past years.

“This increased awareness of the emergency department’s needs simply because more conversations took place,” he said.

All proceeds benefit the foundation’s effort to supply lifesaving equipment for the new ER. The foundation is nearly 75 per cent toward completing its $4 million pledge for equipment purchases.

The emergency department is scheduled to open this fall.
