Responsible celebrating falls on hockey fans

With the Vancouver Canucks winning the Presidents’ Trophy, having the National Hockey League’s leading scorer and best goaltending tandem, B.C. hockey fans have lots to celebrate this spring and are hoping for more.

The British Columbia Automobile Association and its BCAA Traffic Safety Foundation encourage fans across the province to celebrate responsibly during the playoffs and ensure their post-season fun is not marred by an impaired driving tragedy.

Fans consuming alcohol at games, in bars and restaurants, or at home with their friends and families, have several options to avoid drinking and driving – assign a designated driver, take transit, walk, call a cab or call for BCAA’s Safe-Ride-Home service.

“We want everyone to remember the fun they had and the excitement of having a team in the playoffs,” said Allan Lamb, executive director of the BCAA Traffic Safety Foundation. “A poor choice to get behind the wheel after drinking could result in someone having a very different memory – something they’d prefer to forget.”

The association’s Safe-Ride-Home service is available to BCAA members who unexpectedly find themselves in a situation where they are unable to drive safely for reasons such as medical treatment, physical injury or consumption of alcohol. The service, which began as a three-month trial in December, is now a permanent BCAA feature.

Members are entitled to one Safe-Ride-Home call per year, and the tow home is limited to members and their vehicles.
