Most kids have a fascination with trains, large and small.
Sometimes as adults we find that our inner child still enjoys trains, both large and small. To many, the hobby of model railroading fills that need to enjoy trains in miniature.
Model railroading offers a range of fun and excitement. You will get to work with your hands, work with your mind, and have a great time exercising your imagination as you express yourself through something uniquely your own.
Some of the enjoyable activities that model railroaders choose from include carpentry, electronics, painting, model building, engineering, historical research, and more.
It may be that dad has the love of trains, but the hobby can be shared with members of your family. Maybe mom has the artistic talent to paint the backdrop or build the scenery. The children will like to operate the trains or build some kits. If you build a layout based on a real railroad, there will be history research that the family can do together. During construction the basic carpentry and wiring skills can be shared.
There are many model railroaders on Vancouver Island and on Sunday (April 14), they will be gathering at the Beban Park social centre for the 29th annual Vancouver Island Spring Model Railroad Show.
The event is open to the public and includes operating layouts in various scales, swap-n-shop tables, and information tables about the hobby for beginners.
The show runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. with a minimal admission charge at the door.
