Pumpkin sales good for health

NANAIMO: Hospital foundation benefits from sale of Thrifty Foods pumpkins.

While a well-recognized symbol of Halloween, pumpkins have more than one use thanks to the generosity of Thrifty Foods.

Until Oct. 31,  $1 from the sale of every B.C. pumpkin sold at all 28 Thrifty Foods locations will be donated to 14 hospital foundations throughout Vancouver Island, the Lower Mainland and on Salt Spring Island.

“We are proud to partner with and support local hospitals, hospital foundations and other health-focused organizations raising funds for much-needed medical equipment,” said Jim Dores, president of Thrifty Foods. “Since 2008, our customers and staff have helped us raise over $144,000 for hospital foundations in all Island and Lower Mainland communities served by Thrifty Foods.”

Island organizations supported by the fundraising campaign include Nanaimo and District Hospital Foundation, and Victoria, Saanich Peninsula, Cowichan, Campbell River and St. Joseph’s hospital foundations.

Nanaimo’s Thrifty Foods stores are at Longwood Station, Brooks Landing and Port Place shopping centres.
