Nanaimo residents will have a chance to smash Halloween pumpkins all in benefit of the Nanaimo Child Development Centre this weekend.

The Great Pumpkin Toss is slated for Saturday, Nov. 5, from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. at Meadow Creek Community Park near East Wellington fire hall. There will be numerous ways to dispose of jack-o’-lanterns, according to Kat Scott, an organizer with Alair Homes Nanaimo, including with pumpkin-firing devices from Alair and VMAC Air Innovated.

Besides projectiles, there will be other ways to dispose of the gourds and many things for people to do, said Scott. There will also be a barbecue and a bake sale, by donation.

“We have a pumpkin smash, we have a pumpkin shot put, we have kids’ colouring pages done by a local artist, Nick May …and then we have pumpkin bowling, so we have a lot more activities,” Scott said.

She said 1,000 people attended last year and organizers anticipate the same this year, but hope for more.

“The pumpkins are looking really good this year,” said Scott. “We had a drought last year, so it was really hard to get pumpkins, but this year everyone’s willing to donate them to us this year, which is pretty awesome. We want everybody to come out and try to raise as much money for the [Nanaimo Child Development Centre] as possible.”
