Program promotes rail safety

Every year, dozens of Canadians are seriously injured or killed while crossing train tracks or trespassing on railway property.

Operation Lifesaver’s National Public-Rail Safety Week May 2-8 aims to reduce crossing collisions and trespassing incidents along Canada’s railways.

Last year, there were 79 fatalities and 47 serious injuries involving the public along railway tracks across Canada. A Nanaimo woman was killed last year when she attempted to cross the tracks near Terminal Park Mall.

Operation Lifesaver, a national program sponsored by Transport Canada and the Railway Association of Canada, will be hosting numerous events and activities across Canada during rail safety week, including crossing blitzes, mock collisions, public service announcements, presentations by volunteers in schools, mall displays, conferences and speeches to community groups.
