Organizations share $600,000 in grants

More than two dozen arts and cultural organizations, sports clubs and historical associations in Nanaimo share more than $600,000 in the latest round of gaming grants announced by the province.

More than two dozen arts and cultural organizations, sports clubs and historical associations in Nanaimo share more than $600,000 in the latest round of gaming grants announced by the province.

The Nanaimo Art Gallery Society receives the biggest cheque, for $74,000, while the Vancouver Island Symphony gets $65,000 and the Nanaimo and District Museum Society gets $63,000.

On the sporting side, Nanaimo Minor Hockey gets $45,000, Nanaimo Minor Baseball receives $36,325 and both the Nanaimo BMX Association and Nanaimo Gymnastics School receive $33,000, while the local lacrosse association gets $32,785.

The Loyal Nanaimo Bathtub Society also gets $30,000.

The Wellington-Pleasant Valley-Lantzville Softball Association also receives $25,455.

Other grant recipients include: Nanaimo Festival Heritage Theatre Society, $25,000; L’Association des Francophones de Nanaimo, $25,000; Nanaimo Skating Club, $22,000; Vancouver Island Military Museum, $20,000; Nanaimo Diamonds Synchronized Swim Club, $15,800;  Nanaimo Community Archives Society, $14,000; Nanaimo Tae Kwon Do Club, $12,000; Nanaimo Empire Day Celebration Society, $11,000; Nanaimo Rowing Club, $10,170; Nanaimo Theatre Group, $10,000; Nanaimo Shotokan Karate Club, $8,400; Tozan Cultural Society, $7,000; Nanaimo Hungarian Cultural Society, $5,500; Nanaimo Family History Society, $3,667; Ukrainian Canadian Cultural Society of Nanaimo, $1,500.
