New riders participate in Bike to Work Week

NANAIMO – Participation saw an increase of 54 per cent in Nanaimo's Bike to Work Week.

Bike to Work week in Nanaimo saw a 54-per cent increase in participation over last year, according to the City of Nanaimo.

This year, 733 residents participated in Bike to Work week from May 25-31, which saw commuters from across the province ride their bikes to work and school.

About 20 per cent of participants identified themselves as new riders. Riders clocked an estimated 25,000 kilometres. The city estimates that more than 5,400 kilograms of greenhouse gas emissions were reduced.
