New locale allows for bigger German Christmas Village in Nanaimo

Market being held at Cavallotti Lodge this weekend, Nov. 23-24

A change of venues has allowed a German Christmas market to expand and offer more.

Held at the German Cultural Centre previously, Nanaimo Christmas Village is taking place at Cavallotti Lodge this weekend, Nov. 23-24, as the centre changed ownership, said Ben Lange, Christmas Village marketing manager.

Organizers had to improvise and find a new site, but it turns out, the lodge allows for more people to sell their wares as it is more centrally located and accessible, with more parking, and there are 25 vendors, up from 15.

"We have anything from woodworking, glass, metal, jewelry, gifts, so there's really everything this year, and we always make sure that it's a very broad spectrum, so it's not multiples of the same," said Lange.

In addition, there is German cuisine as well for people to enjoy.

"That's usually what sets us apart from other markets,” said the marketing manager. "We have German sausages, potato salad, sauerkraut, all of that, it's all homemade … the sausage is our family recipe that we that we put together."

Entry is by donation or an unwrapped to to that will go to the Great Nanaimo Toy Drive, and 50 per cent of entry fees will go to the toy drive as well.

Nanaimo Christmas Village is open till 5 p.m. Saturday and from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. on Sunday at Cavallotti Lodge, 2060 E. Wellington Rd.
