Seedy Sunday in Nanaimo is a sure sign that spring is around the corner.

The annual seed-exchange event happens this Sunday, March 3, at Nanaimo District Secondary School.

“It started off years back as just a seed exchange, where people could come and trade seeds, and it’s really evolved,” said Glenda Stroomer, Seedy Sunday coordinator. “We still have quite a large seed exchange, but … it’s become a gardening event all about seeds.”

For a $3 admission, visitors can attend nine workshops and trade and buy organic seeds and fertilizers, local garden supplies and native plants and trees. There will also be kids’ activities and food.

Some of the talks this year include growing, drying and using herbs; reducing plastics in the garden; backyard composting; caring for mason bees and more.

Seedy Sunday is put on by both the Nanaimo Foodshare Society and the Nanaimo Community Gardens Society, and traditionally happens the first weekend in March.

“It’s time for people to start sorting out their seeds,” Stroomer said.

Seedy Sunday goes from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. and organizers encourage visitors to come to NDSS on their bikes, on public transit or by carpooling.
