"A spark of comfort and community" is how international student Ludovico Belmonte referred to Nanaimo African Heritage Society's gala that closed out this year's Black History Month.
Started 25 years ago, the February event serves to honour black contributions to the community during Black History Month. Last month's gala was no different, featuring Nanaimo-Lantzville MLA George Anderson and Lisa Gunderson as keynote speakers, and performances by Dee Daniels and Nadine States.
"As a younger person, I presume that I am able to provide a different perspective on the celebration of the 25th Black History Gala…" Belmonte said in a press release. "Personally, I had a lot of fun and I was able to see a spark of comfort and community that I haven’t seen in a long time."
Other attendees included Andrea Noble with the Port Theatre Society.
"The celebration of black culture is inspiring for all ages, especially the young people in Nanaimo," she said. "It's amazing to see guests embracing their heritage and proudly sharing it with others."
