Nanaimo wins tree-planting grant

NANAIMO – A $13,000 grant will be used to plant more than 50 trees at Hawthorne Park.

Nanaimo’s Hawthorne Park will offer more cover for shade-seekers thanks to a new tree-planting grant.

The City of Nanaimo is one of 22 winners from across Canada to get money from TD Friends of the Environment Foundation and Tree Canada, as part of the TD Green Streets program.

The $13,300 grant will go toward planting more than 50 trees of differing sizes and species at Hawthorne Park, providing more shade near the space’s new playground and contributing to the overall urban forest and park ecology of the neighbourhood, a press release says.

Hawthorne park is a 1.5-hectare neighbourhood green space near Wakesiah Road.
