A taxi company in Nanaimo is hoping it can help make the roads safer by giving out reflective vests to people experiencing homelessness.

Members of AC Taxi Nanaimo were out in the downtown area distributing high-visibility vests on Thursday, Nov. 21.

Inderpreet Minhas, one of the company's directors, said this is the first time AC Taxi is doing this. The company is committed to road safety and looking after people in the community, he said, and with less daylight hours and rain, it is harder for drivers to see people walking.

"We saw an accident last year where a lady got hit and was run over by vehicles twice and we got an idea to do something about it," Minhas said. "We're giving out 100 vests and if we need more, we'll definitely get more."

Considering AC Taxi runs a fleet of 60 cars, there are bound to be numerous close calls, the board director added. He said the company intends to distribute vests next year, as well.

"We're trying to do it once a year, around November," he said. "When it's getting dark, and then rain is there, and all of a sudden drivers are not ready."
