Ahoy Mateys! The pirate crew of Royal LePage Nanaimo Realty dare the hardiest and heartiest of souls to take the plunge into the freezing depths of Departure Bay for the 65th annual Boxing Day polar bear swim.

The rush to the waves happens in front of the Kin Hut on Thursday, Dec. 26, at 1 p.m., but community members are also invited to spend time at the park before and after their daring dunk. There will be music and food trucks, and a beach fire and a giant hot tub for those needing to raise their post-swim core temperatures.

The event is free for everyone and the first person into the water gets to claim bragging rights. Registration starts at 11 a.m. with the swim at 1 p.m.
