Nanaimo RCMP spokesman earns Crime Stoppers award

NANAIMO – Const. Gary O'Brien, Nanaimo RCMP spokesman, wins Crime Stopper of the Year award.

Const. Gary O'Brien, Nanaimo RCMP spokesman and Crime Stoppers program coordinator, won recognition from his peers and brought home a trophy from the 2015 B.C. Crime Stoppers Conference.

The conference awards ceremony, held in Prince George on the weekend, honoured people working in 38 Crime Stoppers community programs across B.C.

O'Brien was presented with the 2014 Crime Stoppers Coordinator of the Year award in 50,000 to 100,000 population category.

"Crime Stoppers, itself, is directly reflective of the community, the media and the police," O'Brien said. "If you don't have all three on board the program won't be a success and it is a success in Nanaimo because everybody's buying into it."

O'Brien, who took over as Nanaimo Crime Stoppers coordinator in 2009, was also nominated for the award in 2011.

Nanaimo will host the 2016 conference.
