The NightOwls, set to land in Nanaimo in 2021, want to start the new year by giving back to the community.

The West Coast League baseball team is holding a Fill the RV drive Jan. 1 to gather donations of non-perishable food items for the Loaves and Fishes Community Food Bank.

The NightOwls will set up in the parking lot at the Serauxmen Sports Fields accessible off Second Street – not at their home field, Serauxmen Stadium on Third Street – from noon-4 p.m. New Year’s Day to try to fill up an Arbutus RV trailer.

The team will have a contactless drop-off system that follows health rules.

“Let’s fill the RV … to help those who need it most as we find our way out of this pandemic,” said Jim Swanson, NightOwls GM.

The press release also teased that people should look to the skies over Serauxmen Stadium at 6 p.m. Jan. 1.
