The Nanaimo Clippers are trying to score some support for Loaves and Fishes Community Food Bank.

With hardships coming from the COVID-19 pandemic, Shaw Communications, the B.C. Hockey League and its 17 Canadian franchises are taking part in Shaw’s Brighter Communities initiative, which will encourage people t0 donate money by sending a text. COVID-19 restrictions have been in place for over a year, said a press release, and charities in the communities are facing “substantial increases in demand for their services but considerable declines in donations.”

Until May 31, the Clippers are encouraging people in the community to text NANKIDS to 41010 to donate $10, and Shaw will match every donation up to a total of $3,000.

“The non-profit sector has faced immense challenges over this past year. More Canadians are using their services, while resources that organizations need to continue their essential work in the community are more strained than ever…” said Dave Cannon, BCHL’s executive director of business development. “We wanted to do our part to bring the community together to support these organizations.”
