Nanaimo CareShare grows fleet, adds hub

NANAIMO – Care share cooperative adds car and new hub at Country Club Centre.

Nanaimo Car Share cooperative has added a third vehicle to its fleet and a third operations hub at Country Club Centre.

The cooperative's latest purchase  is a 2004 Toyota Echo sedan from Nanaimo Toyota.

The additions were paid for, in part, with a grant from Coastal Community Credit Union and the new hub at Country Club, chosen for its high population density and proximity to public transit, will allow the cooperative to serve more neighbourhoods.

Nanaimo Car Share started service in April 2011 and has hubs near Port Place Mall and the Prideaux Street transit exchange, which serve residents and businesses downtown and on Gabriola and Protection islands.

Nanaimo Car Share's 80-plus members pay usage fees, based on the hours a car is needed and avoid the high costs of owning a vehicle. The cooperative pays for insurance, maintenance, repairs, roadside assistance and fuel. Car Share members also have access to more than 300 car share program vehicles in Vancouver, Victoria and the Sunshine Coast.

The non-profit cooperative is 100 per cent volunteer managed and operated.

For information on membership, please visit the Nanaimo CareShare website at  nanaimocarshare.ca or call 250-741-4141.
