MULTIMEDIA: Goats were special guests at Nanaimo Earth Day celebration

Community event was held Saturday, April 21, at John Barsby Secondary School

Earth Day 2018 festivities took place at John Barsby Secondary School on Saturday.

Goats were one of the day’s popular attractions and Elizabeth Waller, of Laughing Raven Farm, talked with the Nanaimo News Bulletin about the animals. They make the most wonderful pets at small farms, she said.

“They’re really personable,” said Waller. “They’re super intelligent, they’re just the most fun animals you [would] ever want to have in the yard. They are quiet, they’re very clean, they’re just really great all around pets.”

However, goats aren’t really for those in the city, according to Waller.

“In the zoning, as far as I know, there are no municipalities at this time that allow goats to be in town as pets … we live out in Yellow Point area, where we are allowed to have the goats, but I know that there was a case in Victoria, a few years ago, where the Saanich municipality was considering allowing goats to be pets in town and they do have a trial going with that right now.”
