Malaspina Radio Society nears fundraising target

Radio Malaspina Society is just over $5,000 away from hitting its fall fundraising goal of $30,000.

Radio Malaspina Society is just over $5,000 away from hitting its fall fundraising goal of $30,000.

The society, which operates the non-profit CHLY 101.7 FM station, started the campaign in the last week of October and has had approximately 500 people pledged to donate $25,000.

Donations from the community is the station’s biggest source of funding.

“Along with donations, VIU student memberships and a small amount of advertising, the station operates on a budget of $80,000 a year,” said  Trevor Ruck, society vice-president.

The station broadcasts a wide variety of music including jazz, Afro beat, reggae, indie rock, funk, hip hop and also airs commentary programs including Democracy Now.
