The push toward the production of more local food continues Sunday (March 6) with the seventh annual Seedy Sunday.
The event, hosted by Nanaimo Foodshare Society and the Nanaimo Community Garden Society, takes place at Bowen Park Auditorium from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and features a spring seed swap and sale, vendor products, information booths and educational activities for children.
Free workshops throughout the day include:
Food security, 10:30-11:30 a.m. – Lisa Bhopalsingh will explain how the Regional District of Nanaimo’s draft regional growth strategy supports local food security and local food production. She will cover proposed policies to limit urban sprawl.
Urban mini-farming, noon to 1 p.m. – Dirk Becker will encourage, educate, and inspire residents to start their own mini-farm. The workshop will include getting started and materials needed.
Honest soil, 1:30-2:30 p.m. – Connie Kuramoto will teach gardeners how to build soil so as to kiss insect and disease problems goodbye.
“Without locally-owned seeds we don’t have truly local food,” says Glenda Stroomer, coordinator of Nanaimo’s Seedy Sunday. “The swap tables are a bit like the Antiques Road Show, you never know what treasures you will find and everyone wants to see what’s on offer this year.”
