Leaders set pace for run

Volunteers make a big difference in battle against cancer.

Leaders in the fight for a future without breast cancer are needed in Nanaimo.

The Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation’s 21st annual CIBC Run for the Cure takes place Sept. 30 and volunteer run directors are needed to lead all aspects of event planning.

The Run for the Cure is the foundation’s signature national event, happening in communities across the country.

In Nanaimo, the event raised more than $217,000 last year with more than 1,000 people participating.

Run directors will need strong organizational, communication and leadership skills and be able to commit to the position year-round, with peak months being April to October.

Training, support and guidance is provided by foundation staff.

“Being involved in the Run for the Cure has allowed me the opportunity to be a part of something much bigger than myself,” said Ruth Christmas, current volunteer co-run director in Nanaimo, in a press release. “Not everyone can say that what they do makes a difference in people’s lives, but I am a part of something that really does.”

Application deadline is Jan. 19 and four-day training is provided.
