Hikers observe a moment of silence atop Mount Benson on Friday at 11 a.m. in honour of Remembrance Day. The summit ceremony has become an annual tradition in Nanaimo.

Hikers in Nanaimo took Remembrance Day to another level.

Close to 50 people hiked to the top of Mount Benson on Friday morning in time to observe a moment of silence, then sang O Canada. A new flag was attached to the pole, replacing an old, tattered one.

The ascent has become a Remembrance Day tradition for some in the community.
