Heritage tour relives coal era

Author Tom Paterson is helping history buffs learn more about Nanaimo’ coal mining heritage and raise money for a good cause through his Black Track tour.

Paterson leads participants on a four-hour commentary tour of the Morden Colliery Historic Provincial Park Sunday (May 15) in support of Friends of Morden Mine’s efforts to preserve the unique 1912 reinforced head frame and tipple. These structures are deteriorating rapidly every year.

With an extensive knowledge of coal mining history and a engaging and dynamic delivery, Paterson has a special ability to recreate the spirit of early coal mining days.

Ticket prices are $30 for one person, $25 each for two or more in a party.

Tours assemble at 10 a.m. at Morden Colliery Historic Provincial Park, on Morden Road off the Island Highway, in front of the head frame. Transportation will pool participants to various mine sites, but participants are asked to provide their own ride to and from the park.

Please e-mail cchristo@shaw.ca or call 250-714-0377 for ticket information.

A second tour is planned for May 29, but is dependent on demand.
