HealthAmongUs activates youth

Healthy eating and exercise are essential to good health, so it is important to teach children at a young age how to make healthier choices.

Instilling the ability to develop good habits will allow children to make wise nutritional decisions for the rest of their life.

Recognizing the importance of this, Nanaimo school district and parks, recreation, and culture have joined forces to host HealthAmongUs 2011.

The week-long event runs Monday through Friday (May 2-6) at Beban Park’s Gyro Youth Field.

The idea of creating a health and wellness event geared toward children began in 2004.

The focus of the event remains getting children moving through fun, non-competitive activities set up to highlight running, jumping, throwing, balancing and pulling – all basic building blocks to physical development.

During the five days of activities more than 4,000 children between the ages of five and 12 will participate.

Support from the community has been vital to the event’s success with donations and sponsorships provided by Columbia Ice, Save-on-Foods, RONA and Richardson Foods Group.

Organizers plan to continue the annual event as a great way to promote a healthy and active lifestyle for young community members.
