Guidance provided for young entrepreneurs

Junior Achievement of British Columbia is using a hands-on approach to introduce youth to the business world.

The not-for-profit organization has launched the Nanaimo Business Club, a program for high school-aged youth that will follow the curriculum of Junior Achievement’s entrepreneurship Company Program.

The program is a hands-on, practical program where youth learn about business by doing business themselves.

With guidance and coaching from local business professionals, participating youth organize an enterprise where their own ideas and real money bring the challenges and rewards of entrepreneurship into focus.

“We believe in the positive impact that Junior Achievement has on youth. This partnership with JA enables our youth members and youth throughout the community to learn about business and community leadership,” said Ian Kalina, executive director Boys and Girls Clubs of Central Vancouver Island. “Registration and participation is free of charge yet the experience will be priceless”

Registration in the Nanaimo Business Club is now open. Students can register on-line at www.jabc.org and click on student pages.

The club meets 6-8 p.m. Wednesdays from Feb. 2 to May 18 at the Chase River Boys and Girls Club, 1400 Cranberry Ave.

Junior Achievement is the world’s largest not-for-profit organization dedicated to educating young people about business. With more than 120 charters world wide, JA brings a global view of business to local communities.

Since 1955, Junior Achievement of British Columbia has partnered with educators, donors and volunteers to bring the real world of work into the classroom.

Programs give students the confidence and skills they need to become the next generation of business and community leaders
