The Nanaimo green bin food and kitchen waste collection service program begins city-wide in October and all households should have received free bins and start-up kits.

Inside the green bin is a counter top collector with a package containing an instructional guide, a new three-month collection schedule, stickers and sample compostable liner bags.

Homeowners on city garbage and recycling collection routes who haven’t received a green bin should call city public works at 250-758-5222.

Residents are reminded that garbage collection changes to once every second week and to make room in their garbage container by adding food waste to the green bin one week before their first scheduled green bin collection day.

The program user guide provides instructions on materials accepted, how to prepare them and other tips.

More information on the green bin program, including a short how-to-video, is available www.nanaimo.ca or by calling 250-758-5222.
