Nanaimo is in bloom, so it’s the perfect time for the Altrusa Garden Tour.

The service club’s fifth annual garden tour is being held June 3, and the event has become an important fundraiser for the club.

Nanaimo’s Altrusa International club has found six beautiful and interesting gardens for this year’s tour, say organizers. People can purchase a $20 ticket from various locations and then make their way to the gardens at their own pace between 10 a.m.-3 p.m. on the date of the tour. At each stop, the home owners or club members will point out features of the gardens and refreshments will be served.

“People are on their own. They have their ticket, they have the addresses and what each garden represents, the theme of the garden, and so they just head out in their car,” said Pat Wagar, Altrusa club member.

She said the club’s focus is on helping women and children, as well as supporting literacy.

“We do a lot of good in the city…” said Wagar. “We’ve helped Haven House, Samaritan House, the hospital, we give high school bursaries, we give bursaries to women that are returning to work and want to take an upgrade.”

Garden tour tickets are available at Green Thumb Garden Centre, KC’s Boutique, Little Tree Garden Centre, Nanoose Edibles, Old Garden Topiary, Turley’s Florist and from Altrusa club members. For information, call Janice at 250-390-2924 or e-mail nanaimo.altrusa@gmail.com.
