Garden days offer fun, education

Plants, education and fun are all on tap this weekend (May 28-29) as Nanaimo Community Gardens Society hosts its inaugural Family Garden Days.

The activities take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days at 271 Pine St., and include free workshops, food, live music and a wide selection of naturally grown, open-pollinated heritage plants, seeds and compost worms.

Master gardeners will be on site to happily answer any gardening questions and workshop topics include composting water quality, gardening demonstrations and tours of the community garden.

Each year volunteers from society raise herb, vegetable and flower seedlings grown without the use of chemical fertilizers or pesticides. The bulk of the plants will be sold at the Family Garden Days.

Children’s activities include face painting, planting seeds, crafts, a stepping stone workshop, music and puppets.

The event is sponsored by Island Savings Credit Union’s GIFT grant program.
