Fundraiser supports Ugandan children

NANAIMO – Black-tie gala will raise money to build a community centre for Ugandan children.

Ugandan children will be the purpose behind a party at Nanaimo Museum when Moksha Yoga and Island Optimal host a black tie gala fundraiser.

The goal is to raise $30,000 for HeartBeat Children, an organization created by Ugandan musician Herbert Kinobe, to build a children’s community village in Uganda.

HeartBeat Children is a social initiative that explores the power of music, dance and theatre to improve life for children in war-torn, disease-stricken and impoverished countries.

The village will also contain a medical facility, housing for orphaned children, gardens where children can farm food and a school.

“It will also have a strong music component, because that one of [Kinobe’s] strengths,” said Steve Hamilton, Moksha Yoga Nanaimo spokesman. “As far as I know it will be a combination of orphans and also children who are very poor and needing support from an educational and nutritional perspective.”

Party with a Purpose happens Jan. 31 at 7 p.m. Tickets are $100 and can be purchased at http://nanaimo.mokshayoga.ca or the yoga studio’s Rutherford location.
