Free seminars supply info on earthquakes

If a big earthquake were to strike Vancouver Island, many of its residents would be at a loss of what to do and how to make sure their families were taken care of.

If a big earthquake were to strike Vancouver Island, many of its residents would be at a loss of what to do and how to make sure their families were taken care of.

In an attempt to educate the public on emergency preparedness, Nanoose Community Services, the Regional District of Nanaimo and Fairwinds Community and Resort are holding two free seminars on earthquakes and how to prepare.

“We want the public to understand some of the harsh realities of a large earthquake in this area,” said Ross Peterson, a retired emergency manager in Nanoose Bay.

The first session is on Friday (June 24) and deals with what can happen during an earthquake. The second session on Monday (June 27) provides advice on what to do.

Both seminars take place at Nanoose Place, 2925 Northwest Bay Rd., from 7-9 p.m.
