While most people were enjoying the festivities during the Canada Day long weekend, 19 teams of diehard competitors were slogging through the pouring rain in a quest to become Island Chase champions.

Presented by Original Joe’s restaurant, the three-day race challenges participants to complete a series of tests in different locations from Victoria to Port Alberni.

Pledges were raised by individual teams with proceeds going to the Nanaimo and District Hospital Foundation to help fund the purchase of medical equipment for the new emergency department under construction at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital.

From paintballing, and bungee jumping, to archery and camping on Newcastle Island, teams travelled between competitions in pursuit of the winners’ circle.

Rebecca Baich, Original Joe’s owner, said she was inspired to become the title sponsor of Island Chase because it is her goal to help her community.

As a result of team fundraising, event organizers presented more than $5,500 to Brenda Rositano of the hospital foundation. Brenda said,

“The Island Chase is fantastic way to raise funds and awareness for the new emergency department,” said Rositano.  “The foundation is incredibly grateful to the hard work of organizers, businesses that hosted challenges, and the teams who participated.”

The foundation has raised 60 per cent of its $4 million goal to equip the new ER with lifesaving equipment.
