Fish hatchery opens doors for fundraiser

Nanaimo River Fish Hatchery is going to be hard pressed to squeeze all of the excitement planned for its open house fundraiser into one day.

Taking place Sunday (May 15) from 10 a.m.  to  3 p.m., the event features fun for the entire family including a salmon barbecue, helicopter rides, trout fishing, coho touch-tank, fly tying and casting, adopt-a-fish to release into the wild, Bobbie the Safety Boat presented by the Nanaimo Auxiliary Coast Guard and educational booths by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans as well as others.

Helicopter rides, provided by West Coast Helicopter, are $60 per person. A shuttle will be provided from the Cassidy rest stop near the Nanaimo River Bridge.

The open house goes rain or shine at the hatchery on Rugby Road, off the Island Highway north of the Nanaimo Airport.
