Films tackle food crisis

A pair of documentary films screening this week tackle the food crisis issue from a world and local viewpoint.

In Food Security, it’s in your hands, film producer Nick Versteeg looks at feeding the world with today’s farming practices, the future of bees, the importance of soil and getting more people to farm.

Versteeg interviews experts on soil and bees, speaks with farmers who changed their large conventional farms into organic farms, and learns what obstacles they overcame to be successful.

The film features Malawi, Africa, one of the poorest countries in the world and shows how people are trying to feed 13 million people on one meal a day.

In the documentary Shining Forth Prosperity, filmmakers Guy Langlois and Remy Chartier follow the lives of students, volunteers and staff at The Farm at Cedar Woods over a growing season.

Throughout the film, students learn sustainable farming skills and how to grow and cook healthy, nutritious, locally grown food. It explores how growing food can increase self esteem, confidence and physical health.

The films will be shown Thursday (May 5) in Bldg. 356, Rm. 109 at VIU. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., and the film starts at 7 p.m. Admission by donation. The filmmakers will be on hand to answer questions.
