Events focus on diabetes awareness

The Nanaimo branch of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation is determined to raise awareness of Type 1 diabetes.

The Nanaimo branch of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation is determined to raise awareness of Type 1 diabetes in the community.

The branch is hosting a meet and swim April 1 at Beban Park Social Centre and Beban Pool from 12:30-4 p.m.

The public is invited to learn more about Type 1 diabetes, discuss what kind of activities they would like to see happen in the Nanaimo area, and then take part in a public swim.

The branch is also taking part in the  annual TELUS Walk to Cure Diabetes June 3 at Maffeo Sutton Park. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m.

The foundation’s signature fundraising event, the TELUS Walk unites communities across Canada to raise funds to cure, treat and prevent Type 1 diabetes.

Last year’s walk raised more than $7.5 million across Canada, and this year’s target is $7.9 million.
