Diabetes Canada hopes that community members can sort through their closets as they will be bringing their truck to Nanaimo next weekend to pick up donations.

The charity is asking for donations of gently used clothing, electronics, sporting goods, household items and other small household donations on Saturday, May 27, at Diabetes Canada’s Nanaimo location at 4166 Departure Bay Rd. Volunteers will be on hand at the curbside drive-up event to take bags or boxes of goods from vehicle trunks.

“We have trucks ready to be filled across Canada including here in Nanaimo,” said Sean Shannon, president and CEO of National Diabetes Trust, in a news release. “At this time of year, people are de-cluttering their closets and around the house, which is the perfect time to donate your unwanted items to Diabetes Canada instead of sending them to a landfill.”

All net proceeds go to support diabetes research, and give children with Type 1 diabetes the opportunity to attend Diabetes Canada summer camps.

Shannon also said the organization diverts 100 million pounds of clothing and small household items from community landfills annually.

The event will start at 9 a.m. and will go until 1 p.m. Those who can’t make it to the donation drive-thru can donate used clothing at one of the charity’s donation bins or they call 1-800-505-5525 for a home pickup.
