Two Nanaimo-based construction companies raised $50,000 for local charities at the first annual Mid Island Dirt Cup charity hockey game.
On March 24, teams representing IWC Excavation and Knappet Industries played “endless back and forth action” over three periods at Oceanside Place in Parksville. Knappett got the better of IWC with the final score of 8-6, however, both sides felt the real winners of the night were the charities.
The teams donated $30,000 to KidSport Nanaimo and $20,000 to the Nanaimo Child Development Centre

“[We are] overwhelmed with the support from the community; it was definitely unexpected,” said Geoff Schulson, the general manager of IWC. “We thank everyone who supported the cause even if it was short notice; it gave us faith as a group to put on a good performance and a good event, and contribute that back to the community.”
The event saw about 500 community members and hockey fans who came to support the teams and the charities.
