Returning after a hiatus due to COVID-19, this year’s Coldest Night of the Year fundraising walk broke records.

This year’s target of $75,000 was shattered with over $100,000 raised and counting following the Feb. 26 event, stated a press release from Island Crisis Care Society. The amount raised will be “double what has been raised in previous years,” it said.

While it rained the day of the event, the weather proved inspirational to walkers, said the press release, with some leaving behind their hats and umbrellas.

One of the 430 participants in Nanaimo was 101-year-old Babs Rogers.

“I like walking. Why not do it for a good cause?” she asked in the press release.

Money raised for the Nanaimo walk will go towards programming for people in the area needing care and support from the society, said the press release. It will also benefit programs such as Project Rise, which provides training, work experience and life skills to participants.

Donations will be accepted until the end of March and can be made at https://cnoy.org/nanaimo.
