Classes still available at VIU's Elder College

NANAIMO – University group celebrates 20th anniversary this fall.

By Marlene Robertson

As we welcome the eleventh month of the year, our thoughts turn to Christmas preparations as the endless cycle of celebrations continue. But before you dive into Christmas shopping, baking, and the whole nine yards, take some time to remember a very special anniversary: the 20th anniversary of Vancouver Island University ElderCollege, a celebration that gives us an opportunity to look toward the future while revisiting the past.

It’s a big milestone for VIU ElderCollege and the group of people who came up with the concept of life-long learning. It’s not too late to register for some of the fall/winter courses.

If you’ve always wanted to join a book club, now is the time. Mayta Ryn will be facilitating a non-fiction book club. After establishing a reading list, the club meets once a month to discuss the book designated for that date. If you have any suggestions, bring them to the meeting.

Or maybe a discussion group is more up your alley. Starting Nov. 7, you can share your views on How To Save the World, also under the leadership of Ryn. It sounds like a lot of fun to me. On Nov. 16 we’re offering Fraud Preventation for Seniors with Vanessa Oltmann, as part of the Saturday Speakers, and if you have a VIU ElderCollege membership, you can take in a free session on Live Safe – Live Wise on Nov. 29.

As you can see, there’s an amazing variety of courses to choose from. We work hard at offering you new and interesting sessions, all taught by volunteers. If you have something you’re passionate about, give us a call and join us as an instructor, or ask about other volunteer opportunities. You won’t be sorry.
