Canada Day isn’t cancelled, but the city’s celebrations will have to happen in citizens’ own backyards this year.
The City of Nanaimo’s annual Canada Day bash at Maffeo Sutton Park won’t happen in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but the municipality is still encouraging residents to show their national pride in other ways.
Starting this week, the city will share on its website and social media channels videos of community members celebrating Canadian culture and offering ideas for planning a backyard Canada Day party with family members or small social circles. The city will also be organizing contests on its Instagram channel.
On Canada Day, parks ambassadors will visit Maffeo Sutton Park, Bowen Park, Westwood Lake Park and Neck Point Park handing out Canada Day-themed items as “random acts of kindness,” noted a city press release.
“Even though we can’t celebrate our nation’s birthday together while we practice physical distancing, we can still celebrate apart,” said Tracy Stuart, a recreation coordinator with the City of Nanaimo, in the release.
