Last year parklets brightened up areas of Commercial Street and provided additional seating for restaurants.

The City of Nanaimo wants residents to ‘park-ticipate’ in an annual urban design event.

The city’s department of cultural planning is hosting Park(ing) Day in September, which is part of a global event that transforms select parking spaces along Commercial Street into temporary, short-term miniature cultural spaces.

The event is designed to raise awareness about issues such as creating a walkable, livable, healthier and creative Nanaimo. It happens in 162 cities in 35 countries, transforming close to 1,000 parking spots into cultural spaces.

Any organization, group of friends or family interested in participating are encouraged to take part. Spaces are limited so participants are encouraged to sign up early.

Participants are asked to submit a proposal no later than Aug. 23 highlighting their space design, theme and programming.

With a limited number of spaces available, proposals will be viewed by a selection panel and only those chosen designs will have the opportunity to participate in the 2016 event, scheduled for Sept. 16.

Each space is encouraged to be creative and must transform the parking space into something positive and unique for the community.

To sign up, or for more information, please e-mail cultureandheritage@nanaimo.ca or call 250-755-4483.
