Ladysmith’s Christmas Cheer campaign received a significant donation to help provide for more families in need.

Western Forest Products announced last week it was donating $100,000 to 30 charitable organizations and First Nations communities in B.C. and Washington State, and $5,000 went to the Ladysmith Resources Centre Association’s Christmas Cheer campaign.

“We are pleased to be extend our year-long commitment to communities with this seasonal tradition again this year,” said Steven Hofer, Western’s president and CEO, in the release. “By partnering with community groups across the areas where we operate, we are able to lend a helping hand to those in need.”

Barb Champagne, campaign coordinator, said in the release that the support will help the LRCA ensure “a special meal and some Christmas cheer” over the holidays for as many as 150 Ladysmith families.

“It is thanks to this kind of remarkable community support that we can meet our fundraising goals at this time,” she said.

Western’s donations corresponded to community size or needs, noted the release, and the Great Nanaimo Toy Drive, in its 40th year, received $10,000.

Krista Simpson, toy drive chairperson, said the toy drive registration was up this year, likely due to increased cost of living.

“The contribution from Western Forest Products will play a significant role in helping us make Christmas a little brighter for over 1,200 children this year,” she said.
