Nanaimo residents hoping to take part in the ALS Society of Canada’s Walk for ALS only need to take a short drive up the Island.

The mid Island walk, sponsored by Peoples Drug Mart, takes place  11 a.m. June 9 at City Hall Square in Parksville. Participants can register for free at www.walkforals.ca.

It’s one of 15 walks across B.C. and the Yukon. The combined goal is $600,000 toward ALS patient services and research into the cause and a cure.

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, also commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a rapidly progressive and ultimately fatal neuromuscular disorder that causes the degeneration of a select group of nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord.
