Caregivers series provides vital information

A few hours on Saturdays could make a huge difference in the lives of Nanaimo caregivers.

The Family Caregiver Series, begins March 5, providing effective ways to care for a person with Alzheimer’s disease or a related dementia.

“For family caregivers, the commitment can last many years, and brings with it high stress levels and illness,” said Jane Hope, regional support and education coordinator for the Alzheimer Society of B.C. “It’s very important for caregivers to take care of themselves. They need to eat well, exercise and get enough rest so they can remain healthy.”

Those points will be emphasized during the workshop, which is designed for family and friends who are caring for a person with dementia at home, in a long-term care facility, attending an adult day centre or living away.

Topics to be covered in four, 2.5-hour sessions include:

u Understanding Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias;

u Effective and creative ways of communicating with a person with dementia;

u Problem solving for responsive behaviours

u Planning ahead and understanding the health-care system

u Self-care for the caregiver

The sessions run Saturdays, March 5, 12, 19 and 26 from 1-3:30 p.m. in Nanaimo Seniors Village’s Dover Room, 6089 Uplands Dr.

Participants are encouraged to attend all four sessions as they form a structured series. Cost is by donation.

As seats are limited, pre-registration is strongly encouraged. Please contact Hope at 250-734-4170 or jhope@alzheimerbc.org.
