An ability by two border collies to find lost lacrosse balls is paying off for Nanaimo Minor Lacrosse teams.

Heather Cooper has been walking Bernie and Ivy through the bushes surrounding the Nanaimo Curling Centre and the adjacent lacrosse box on Wall Street since the dogs were young and noticed they were attracted to lacrosse balls.

“They are constantly finding lost lacrosse balls in the bushes so I would pass them to children I know that play lacrosse as it is apparent many go over the fence and get lost,” said Cooper.

But children are not always around the lacrosse box so Cooper, Bernie and Ivy have collected quite a few balls over the last year.

“Parents tell me the balls are quite expensive, so we’re donating around 68 to a minor lacrosse team,” she said.

“The funny thing is we will probably get them all back eventually.”
